Half Past Lunchtime
by Haley Sarfeld
A feline flâneur wanders the sidewalks, gardens, and – to the chagrin of some – open windows of a downtown neighbourhood on a Sunday afternoon. Along the way, he meets a forager, a flirt, a fatigued full-time worker, a grossed-out gardener, a concussed daydreamer, a robin, a widow, and dozens of cucumber beetles. Will he make it home in time for dinner? Will the humans who cross his path make it through the day without losing their minds? This collection of scenes set around Friendship Park is illustrated with songs – some silly, some sombre – composed and sung by Haley Sarfeld. The human characters have been brought to life by the voices of Becky Bridger, Billie Kearns, Shannon Kingston, and Haley Sarfeld under the direction of Anthony Mann, with sound design by Chancelor Maracle. Half Past Lunchtime is dedicated to Cosmo, Leo, and Toasty. Special thanks to the many outdoor cats in the Inner Harbour. |

Late Nights with Mark the C
by Threshold Theatre
"People ask, sometimes, how is it possible to try to have a moment of respite, a moment of music, in the middle of chaos. But isn’t this planet itself a spinning ball of respite & music, racing from nowhere to nowhere through the chaos?" Ilya Kaminsky Late Nights with Mark the C. is a follow up to Mark Cassidy’s acclaimed autobiographical piece Allistonian Brockvillian Dionysian which was presented most recently at the Theatre Kingston Storefront Fringe 2021. Join fellow shift workers, insomniacs and lonely souls tuning in to CKRM FM in Kingston, Ontario, to hear radio host, Mark the C, sharing “an eclectic mix of thoughts, feelings, spoken word, and the best late night tunes to soothe your nerves.” As the show progresses, audience members are invited to call in with their own stories in response to the theme for the night: “WALLS--how you build them up or take them down”. Late Nights explores isolation, aspiration, mortality, love and connection, fusing the intimacy of late night radio with live theatre. |
Late Nights with Mark the C airs LIVE on Saturday November 5 at 9PM on cfrc.ca or CFRC101.9FM.

Garden of Edith
by Shannon Kingston (with First Ditch Theatre)
It’s a regular neighbourhood, with regular bungalows, a library, and a field– and maybe a little magic. While exploring one day, Edith finds several dozen gnomes living in a secret garden behind her late grandfather’s house. Meanwhile, Edith’s genderfluid Uncle Arnold has returned to the home to prepare it for sale. Together, Edith, Arnold, and the gnomes learn to see their home, their family, and their future in a whole new way. Garden of Edith is the second audio play written by Shannon Kingston and produced by First Ditch Collective. This play is recommended for ages 9 and up and is enjoyable for kids and adults alike. Rich sound brings the neighbourhood, inspired by growing up in Kingston, to life. With humour and depth, Garden of Edith explores intergenerational connection, community, and everyday magic. |
Garden of Edith airs on Sunday November 6 at noon on cfrc.ca or CFRC101.9FM.

Listen 'Round the Fire
by Sam Kaiser
Listen 'Round a Fire is a radio theatre piece written, directed, and sound designed by recent Queen's graduate Sam Kaiser for his graduating Special Studies Project. The piece follows three heroes, cowboys of sorts, in an unfamiliar world who come across a capsule containing mysterious audio logs. When they play these audio logs, they find sound collages, reflections of things and events that may be more familiar to the listener. The intention of this piece is to let listeners reflect on some of the more nonsensical moments that have happened in our world over the past few years and how they may sound to someone far removed from a more collective experience. A major aim of this project was to explore the potential of electroacoustic composition in radio theatre, and how it may be a powerful tool for suggestion. |
Listen Round the Fire airs on Wednesday November 2 at 8pm on CFRC 101.9FM.

Psychological Dangers in Participatory Theatre
by Hailey Scott
Psychological Dangers in Participatory Theatre by Hailey Scott is a documentary research project created during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Stemming from a formative experience at the infamous Sleep No More, Hailey’s research is grounded in how audiences engage with the dangers hidden behind the curtain and how artists can make theatre a compelling and safe experience for their patrons. In this documentary, Scott explores what danger is, shares some thrilling moments she has experienced as an audience member, and introduce listeners to her new theory titled ‘Theatre of Care.’ In executing this project, Scott is thankful to have had the opportunity to work alongside the wonderful people at CFRC and for the support offered to her through the Department of Film & Media’s Robert H. Black Residency Program. |
Psychological Dangers in Participatory Theatre airs on Thursday November 3 from 8-9PM on CFRC 101.9FM.
Virtual Ambrose
by Single Thread Theatre
In December 1919, theatre tycoon and self-made millionaire Ambrose Small sold all of his theatres, deposited the cheque, had lunch with his wife, bought a newspaper - and then disappeared. Adapted from Single Thread’s original productions of Ambrose in 2015 and 2016, Virtual Ambrose is a reimagined digital installation experience. The mystery is explored as audiences go behind the curtains of The Grand Theatre, prompted by beacons that tell the untold story with the aid of a custom mobile app. This digital installation experience has been condensed and streamlined into an audio-only piece for presentation as part of the 2022 Shortwave Festival. A project of Single Thread Theatre Company commissioned by the City of Kingston with additional support from the Ontario Arts Council, the Kick & Push Festival, Southeastern Ontario and Playlines Inc. Recorded at CFRC 101.9 FM in partnership with the Shortwave Theatre Festival.
Virtual Ambrose airs on Wednesday November 2nd from 9-10PM on CFRC 101.9FM.
